Linux - view progress of dd

Oscar Brito

Just open another terminal and run:

$ ps fax| grep dd
    2 ?        S      0:00 [kthreadd]
 2625 pts/0    S+     0:00      |   |   _ sudo dd if=/dev/sdc2 of=/dev/sdb3 bs=512k
 2626 pts/0    D+     0:01      |   |       _ dd if=/dev/sdc2 of=/dev/sdb3 bs=512k

Then,

> while :; do echo 'show progress'; sudo kill -USR1 PID; sleep 5s; done

Creates a cycle that sends USR1 signal to dd child process.

The result in dd terminal will be:
